How we test, in short

  • Round 1: demo lines. We called AI-Receptionist.com, Dialzara, My AI Front Desk, Smith.ai, Telyn and Upfirst. The demo businesses differed. These calls do not support a ranking.
  • Real calls, recorded. The Round 1 recordings and transcripts for five calls are public; none are published for the three Nov 4 evening calls. No live booking was verified.
  • Next: controlled tests. We plan to use the same fake business and scripts for each product. Full test plan

FAQ

Is there a free AI receptionist?

Smith.ai has a free plan with 25 calls a month, then $3 per call (checked Oct 31, 2026). Most others offer a free trial of 3 to 14 days. Free plans and trials

How much does an AI receptionist cost?

Most plans we checked start between $14 and $199 a month (Oct 31, 2026). Plans charge by minute, by call or by customer, so your call volume decides the real cost. Pricing compared

Is an AI receptionist cheaper than a human answering service?

Ruby, a human receptionist service, costs $250 a month for 50 minutes (checked Oct 31, 2026). Several AI plans include more minutes for less. We have not tested Ruby, so we cannot compare call quality yet.

When will results be out?

Do vendors pay to be listed or ranked?

No. Nobody can buy a spot, a score or a review. We don't have any affiliate deals yet.
